Difference between nuts and legumes

Short answer:
  • Legume
    • A pod with multiple seeds inside
    • The pod opens on its own when it’s ready for harvesting (dispersal: explosion)
    • Example: beans, peanuts
  • Nut
    • A hard outer shell protecting a single seed inside
    • Does not open on its own (dispersal: animals)
    • Example: hazelnut, acorn, chestnut, candlenut
My main focus is to let you know the simple short answer to this question so you don’t have to find here and there to get the simple answer. For more information and differences between nuts and legumes, you can search and Google.
