Difference between seeds and grains

Short answer:
  • Grains are the dry fruits of grasses, seeds are typically the inner part of an edible fruits of a plant.
  • Grains has an extra layer of bran (equivalent to the pericarp / flesh of a fruit we eat) compared to seeds.
  • Grain is the product of the fusion of seed coat and the fruit while seed is an ovule which contains embryo, without the fruit part.

    • Embryo, endosperm and seed coat
  • Grains have 4 main components
    • Embryo, endosperm, seed coat and bran
    • Bran is the hard outer layer (like the juicy fruit flesh we eat, but is dry and hard)
